Australia's first square coin was unveiled at the Perth Mint yesterday.

The silver coin, a collector's 50 piece featuring a kookaburra design, costs $39.50.

The idea of a square coin was mooted by the Federal Government in 1919 to replace heavy bronze pennies and halfpennies, and a prototype was produced.

However, the coins were never circulated because of production problems and public pressure.
